Differences between Two Generations
Each generation believes they have many good characteristics that make them special. The older generation does not endorse changes that would make them seem less leading. Although my parents' generation has many positive features, my generation has many things which are better than my parents' generation such as, education, marriage, life styles.
First, we specially have a big gap between my generation and my parents' generation in education. My parents' generation thinks that education is not important, and a small number went to school. Also, they just were concerned about surviving their life and they believed that hard work was the best way to have a wonderful life. On the other hand, my generation considers education essential in this life. Because of that, we go to school. We believe that education is a major requirement to have a nice life.
Second, marriage rules are different between the past and the present. In the past, if you wanted to marry, you went to the father of the bride and proposed to marry his daughter. Then, you would have a wife. They did not ask about the groom’s age, occupation or even if he owned a house. In the past, they were concerned that the groom had a large family and that his family had a good history in the society. Because of that, the average girl's age for marriage was fourteen years old. Now, for my generation there are different roles. If we want to get married, we need to have a high level of education, good job and nice home. Also, the bride’s parents will ask us about our age. If they accept the groom based on these, the good history or large family is not an issue for them. Now, the average girl’s age for marriage is twenty-three years old. I think we can notice a lot of changes between the two generations in the marriage practices.
Finally, the lifestyle is different between the two generations, especially in the clothes, information and entertainment. My parents' generation had one style for clothes which is Thobe and Kotrah for men and the black Al Abayah and Al hijab for women. They did not accept anything else, and if anyone tried to change that, they would fight him. Also, they had limited information about life since they lived in a small community and did not have media to know about world events. In addition, entertainment was limited because the life style forced them to spend most of the time working and they saw entertainment as time wasted. On the other side, my generation has more flexibility about clothes. We can change our clothes and choose what to wear like Thobe, Kotrah, jeans, shorts and hat for men, and Al Abayah, Al hijab with different colours for women. My generation has more information about the world and life because we have the media that gives us the chance to know more about anything new. Now, we can create the entertainment among ourselves like making friends on the internet, traveling, sports and games. I believe we have a better life style than my parents' generation.
In conclusion, maybe when we talk with someone from my parents' generation, he or she will disagree with us that our generation is better than theirs. But, education, marriage and life styles of our time could change their opinion. All these changes teach us about life and change is usually for the better.
