Periodontitis
Smiling is the secret of being attractive; you can possess the heart with a smile. Smiles are the evidence of health and the first important thing to having an attractive smile is your teeth. Poor oral hygiene leads to serious diseases infections of the teeth and gums. One of the most common diseases is periodontitis which is inflammation effecting the periodontium, the soft tissues that surround and support the teeth. It is caused by microorganisms that adhere and grow on the tooth surfaces. The diagnosis of periodontitis is made by clinical examination and radiographic examination. There are many risk factors that can cause periodontitis such as poor oral hygiene, tobacco use, heredity, diabetes, certain medication, and older age, but the most common risk factors are poor oral hygiene, tobacco use, old age, and heredity.
Poor oral hygiene is the biggest cause of periodontitis. What is poor oral hygiene? Neglecting dental care like brushing teeth twice daily, flossing, and good nutrition all lead to poor oral hygiene. The first sign for poor oral hygiene is plaque that forms after eating a meal. Daily brushing and flossing removes plaque, but neglecting to remove plaque within 24 hours can lead to calculus. Calculus is continual accumulation of bacteria plaque and minerals from saliva on the teeth surface. Calculus are impossible to remove by brushing or flossing and requires a visit to a dental office. If the calculus stays on the teeth without treatment for a long time it will lead to gingivitis then periodontitis. The symptoms of gingivitis and periodontitis are similar like swollen gum, redness, bleeding, and bad breath, but the periodontitis has more symptom like loss teeth, receding gums, bad test, and deep pocket.
Today tobacco use is very common with different kinds of cigarette smoking, chewing tobacco, hookah and all kinds of tobacco use lead to periodontal diseases. In fact, studies have shown that people who smoke are at higher risk for periodontal diseases than those who do not smoke. Also the same studies shown that periodontitis becomes worse in people who smoke. The treatment and controlling of periodontitis depends on several factors and smoking is one of them; it's hard to manage and control the disease if the person smokes. In most cases smoking making the treatment ineffective because it accelerates the formation of calculus and making the mouth a good environment for bacteria growth.
Old age is another cause of periodontal diseases. People between 50-60 years old are at risk of having periodontitis, but the severity of the disease depends on several factors. Some kinds of medications have negative effects on oral health and increase the ability to infect with periodontal diseases. In addition, diabetes, and high blood pressure are common diseases in older people and they have serious effects on the teeth, specially, diabetes. It is normal to have periodontitis in older age but poor oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes can make the diseases worse, and lead to the loss of teeth.
Another cause of periodontitis is hereditary. In some cases studies have found people between 16-30 years have severe periodontal diseases even though they have good oral hygiene, good health and they do not have serious diseases or use tobacco. In this cases the person has hereditary periodontal diseases and it is worse because it is starts early and is difficult to control. In the beginning the dental health organization said it is caused by poor oral hygiene but later studies showed this kind of periodontitis is hereditary. The first area affected with this disease are incisors and first molar in the upper and lower jaw. This disease is called aggressive periodontitis and it is painful more than chronic periodontitis which effect first premolar and canine at first stage.
In conclusion, poor oral hygiene, tobacco use, old age, and heredity is a bad effect on teeth, but on the other hand good oral hygiene can improve teeth and smile. The easiest way to protect the teeth is by brushing twice daily, flossing and regularly visiting the dental office. Also avoid risk factors like smoking. The first defense line to having an attractive smile is good oral hygiene.
