Generation X and Generation Y
Most people notice conflict between parents and their children. Although some people consider this normal, other people tend to identify the reasons behind this conflict. One of the main reasons for conflict is that there are many differences between generations, and these differences will become clear if we look at the education background, technology use, and living costs for each generation.
Education has an important role in terms of how people think and respond to their lives. In the past, education was not easy and available for everybody like it is these days. Most of the people in the older generation faced some difficulties in completing their education; there were not enough schools or transportation to school for them. In addition, in the older generation, the awareness of the importance of education was low; they thought that having a job was more important than education. On the other side, for the people in the new generation education is easy with a huge number of schools and a variety of transportation. The new generation considers education a priority in life, which has led to both generations having different life styles.
Each generations’ life style has been impacted by technology. People in the older generation did not rely on technological machines and devices such as washing machines, dishwashers, computers and Internet because it was not available to them. Moreover, they tended to be less interested in new technologies. The new generation, however, has become addicted to new technologies. Although sometimes this new technology costs a lot of money, they do not care about the costs as much as the older generation.
Moreover, living costs have changed remarkably. In the older generation, living costs were much less than these days. The average income in the past was around $1,000.00 dollars per month and it was enough to cover all the living costs for them such as the rent, bills and food. In addition, the older generation tended to reduce their living costs by buying only what they needed. In contrast, people in the next generation are facing difficulties to cover the increase in their living costs with decrease in their income. Moreover, they care more about luxury items than the basic needs, which effects the increase in their living costs.
Finally, for sure life will not be the same for all generations. The conflict between the two generations arises because they have lived in different circumstances, and have been affected by different factors such as education, life style and living costs.
