My Battle For My First Mobile
According to Italian philosopher Machiavelli, " The ends justify the means." I do not know whether you agree or disagree with this statement. However, when I was 14 years old I believed in this statement more than anything else. I was in intermediate school and I was captivated with new a technological device called the Mobile. Most of my friends bought Mobile and they started to communicate with each other through text massages or calls, so I decided I needed one for myself. My father was very concerned; he was not sure that I need one. So I started to think, how can I convince him? Which "means" should I come up with to convince him?
My first way to convince my father was my mother. My mother is the balancing power in our family because she is the easy going and open-minded one, where my father acts like the strong one. So, I woke up early one day and I cleaned my room and the living room. Also I made a lovely breakfast. When my mother woke up she was actually surprised. Immediately she knew it was not just me being a nice daughter. She only needed to give me a look to make me say what I wanted. I told her that I wanted her to convince my father to buy me a Mobile. My mother told me that’s ok, but not now. I could buy it when I went to high school. I was not happy with my mother’s response. I would have to try another way.
My next step was to threaten my parents that I was going to drop out of school. They did not believed me in the first place because they knew how much I loved my school. However, I decided to prove to them that I would. I started to be absent from school and after just two days I realized that I was punishing myself by locking myself up in my home. I got back to school and gave up this bad idea, but I did not give up with "the ends".
“The third time is a charm” is true in my story. One day, I saw my father watching Al Jazeera News channel, and I saw how some people expressed their unhappiness about something by protesting against it. I said to myself that I am going to protest against my father’s rules. The next day, I went to the bookstore. I bought a marker and a lot of poster boards. I wrote a lot of polite objection statements like, "You prevented me from having a Mobile and that is frustrating me, ” and, “You should trust me, so I can trust myself.” I hung it up on all of the walls in our house. Only one day passed and my father took me to the mall and bought a Mobile for me. It was a NOKIA 7610. I remember that night I could not sleep and I was so excited to tell my friends about it.
Machiavelli said, "The ends justify the means," and I want say that it is not true all the time. We have the right to reach our demands as long as we reach them in the right ways. Convincing my father was not easy for me, from talking to my mother to protesting against my father rules, but with patience and respect I did it.
